Aakash - the world’s cheapest tablet has been launched by Indian government. It is designed and developed by DataWind, aimed at the Indian students. It is disclosed by the HRD minister, Kapil Sibal on 22 July 2010. The purpose of Aakash is to ‘revolutionize education’ by giving a low cost computing device to as many students as possible across the globe. Aakash tablet will be available between Rs. 1500 - Rs. 1750 to students and teachers in colleges and Universities and for general public, it is priced at Rs. 3000 inclusive of taxes. It will fill the gap between the current technology and the economically backward sections of India. Still the government is unclear about the availability of the device in commercial market and online for rest of the people but initially it will be distributed through colleges and universities to the students.

The government will be discharging 100,000 computer tablets by January 2012. From now, you can only book or buy your tablet at the official webpage by filling the form which is given in the right hand sidebar of the website. Aakash tablet would be available through the best online store website Flipkart and ebay.com or ebay.in. The device will come with Gevernment Sakshat portal and also with pre-installed apps.

Aakash tablet is not available in the market as the device is still in manufacturing stage but the Indian government has decided to launch it for students in 2011, expected in one or two months. The total of 504 universities and 25,000 colleges countrywide would be the beneficiaries of this android tablet as apart of India’s (NMEICT) National Mission for Education, Information and Communication Technology. It would be available at low price for the purpose of spreading literacy through technological methods.

The student version will come without SIM and GPRS facility but supports Wi-Fi connection to access internet while the rest of the device will come with SIM and GPRS facility. The students will get this device from the universities and it will be an asset for the students as it would give them chance to shine in Education .The tablet will be available to general public at retail stores with the name ‘UbiSlate7’ from November 2011 onwards and also will come with an unlimited mobile internet at Rs. 98 per month.
