Toyota announced that it has decreased the cost of making fuel-cell powered vehicles by 90 percent from over the past few years. In the upcoming years, the company plans to sell its first fuel-cell vehicle for $50,000 beginning in 2015. The other car companies include Honda, General Motors, Daimler, and Hyundai are also hoping to be able to provide hydrogen cars in year 2015.

Yoshihiko Masuda, the Toyota’s managing director for advanced autos, said that “the first hydrogen model will have a driving range that is similar to a gasoline car” and added that “the Toyota hydrogen car will have “some extra cost” over a comparable gasoline car,” according to the bloomberg.com. The company’s current hybrid hydrogen fuel cell vehicle is Toyota FCHV that stands for “Fuel Cell Hybrid Vehicle.”

In 1996, Toyota Motor Corporation unveiled a fuel-cell vehicle that is prepared with a hydrogen-absorbing alloy for storage of pure hydrogen and with mainly focus on fuel-cell, hybrid and electric automobiles, Toyota and General Motors reached an agreement to cooperate in the research and development of environmentally advanced vehicles in 1999. Toyota FCHV is Japan's first fuel cell vehicle to acquire vehicle type certification under the Road Vehicles Act by Japan's Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport (MLIT).

In 2005, the FCHV’s latest generation was introduced. Over the previous generation, the vehicle features many improvements in design, making it more reliable, durable and easier to maintain. Toyota improved FCHV efficiency, extending its range to over 200 miles on a fill-up of hydrogen. Toyota has been testing its FCHV vehicles in California since 2001.

The company states, "... a fleet of 25 vehicles has accumulated over 100,000 real-world driving miles. With a range of up to 180 miles per gallon at top speed of 96 miles per hour and nearly 30 miles on battery power alone, this fuel-cell Toyota is providing the kind of performance necessary for real-world driving conditions in today's real-world environment."

And, "Most recently, Toyota tested the FCHV in cold temperature conditions, a critical milestone for the progression of the fuel cell program. Fuel cell technology offers great promise and plays a key role in our strategy toward sustainable transportation."
