Volkswagen had launched 6 prototypes of VW Up with different unique concepts at the recently held Frankfurt Motor Show. "Volkswagen Cross Up 2012" is one of that unique versions and it will come in the market in 2012. The Up series of Volkswagen has engendered a lot of interest of people owing to its affordability for them. Volkswagen Cross Up 2012 is the five-door hatchback version of the Up series. Probably, it will be the best possible option for the small car market of India from the German brand.

The design of this five-door hatchback is based on the smaller three-door Up, however it looks definitely longer as well as bigger. Look wise, the design of Cross Up is quite impressive. It looks compact, sporty and somewhat aggressive. The rear side of Cross Up looks nice and it is very clean. It also looks like to possess a glass hatch similar to the Honda Brio. Perhaps the true production model will be modulated, and the expected modifications are no roof rails, wheel caps in place of alloys or even the black cladding on the arches of wheel. Dimension wise, the Cross Up measures 3.54 m length, 1.48 m height and 1.64 m width.
The Cross Up will feature the windows and the C-pillar at 90 degree angle which will give it a ground appearance resembling to a minivan. The rough, redesigned bumpers front from this car is distinguished by silvery cross sections with air intake grilles and integrated fog lamps in the design of honeycomb mesh bottom area. The under ride bar will also be silver. The incorporated rear under run bar is compatible to the front and a cross section of the silver bumper.
This five-door hatchback will come with well-designed and sparse interiors. Volkswagen Cross Up had take the parts such as the hand brake, the knobs for the climate control, the speedometer pods, etc from the Polo to keep low expenditures. The Up may be spacious for 4 adults with just about room in the boot for a weekend trip. The design of the console and the fascia will be remain same as previous version. However, the ergonomics and the overall comfort for the driver will be superior.
Another attraction of VW Cross Up is its higher ground clearance of 15 mm. There is no confirmation about the engine option. But probably, it will come with one liter 3-cylinder petrol engine which can develop 60 or 75 hp, as utilized in the variants with 2 doors. This will be companion to a five-speed manual gearbox having ARAI certified mileage of about 20kmpl. A 75 hp 1.2 turbo-diesel engine may also join the model range.
The Cross Up will hit the international market at the mid or end of 2012. The expected starting price of Cross Up is around Rs 3.5 lakh. Further details of this hatchback will be clear at the upcoming Auto Expo in January, 2012.
